Figuring out how to adjust garage door springs can be difficult for the average at-home handyman. Luckily, you aren't alone. Lots of people have garage door springs; and a lot of those garage door springs need adjusting every now and then. When the time comes, read up on how to adjust garage door springs below:
- Know what kind of garage door springs you own. It would be impossible to adjust garage door springs without fully understanding what types of them there are. For example, the two most common are Torsion and Side-Mounted springs. Torsion garage door springs are mounted above the frame, parallel to it. Side-Mounted garage door springs are on each side of the upper track.
- Secure the door. We don't want any accidents due in part to your garage door springs. Put a C-clamp on the track, above the bottom roller. This will prevent any sort of problematic falling that might occur while adjusting.
- Do the adjustments. Check to see the pulleys are working optimally. Any "wobbling" must end up in you replacing the old part with a more substantial spring. Torsion springs (some of them) can be adjusted with a special drill adapter. Safety cables, for Side-Mounted springs, must be unattached while configuring and testing them.
- Test before removing equipment. Now those garage door springs of yours might be working well, but test them a few times just to be sure. The springs should not be sloppy and tension in the coils should be enough to sustain the door.
As with anything hazardous, always have a knowledgeable person assist you while attempting to adjust garage door springs. For example, a friend who is good in carpentry or tools might be of great use here. Have fun, and be safe!
