Knowing how to adjust garage doors may be necessary from time to time. If your garage door is not functioning as it should, there are some adjustments that you can make to help it function correctly. The tension springs can be dangerous to adjust, and it is recommended that you have a professional adjust these. Follow these steps to learn about how to adjust a garage door.
What you will need
- Wood block
- Test the auto-reverse feature of the garage door. Do this by pressing the garage door button to close the door. When the door starts to move, place a wooden block under the door. The door should reverse and stay open. This is an important safety feature. You can adjust the positions of the sensors on each side of the door if necessary.
- The limit switches are normally located on the center garage door track. These switches make the door stop moving when it is fully open or closed. If the door does not meet the ground when closed, move the limit switch until it just meets the ground. You can use weather stripping if the ground is not level.
- The down force knob is located on the garage door opener motor case. Check the manual for the exact location. This control shuts of the engine and stops the door motion if there is an obstruction. Test this setting first by firmly pushing up on the door as it is closing. If it shuts off, this setting is fine. If not, adjust the knob left or right until it works.
