Taking the time to learn how to adopt a dog is an important responsibility, but it comes with a special reward. Be sure that you are ready to become a pet owner and get everything ready. In no time, you will be bringing home a brand new friend. Learn how to adopt a dog today and add one more member to your family.

  1. Find out where you can adopt a dog. There are many organizations that work to help get animals adopted. You can even adopt from a local shelter. There are always dogs that need to be adopted, no matter where you are located.
  2. Contact the company and arrange a time to meet the dogs. Many times dogs may be fostered by different families and so the best way to see as many dogs as possible is to go to an adoption day. On these days, many of the animals are brought to a central location, like a pet store.
  3. Bring everything that you will need to take an adopted dog home. If you are going to be adopting right away, and you already know what size or type of dog you want, bring a collar and leash to make it easier to get him home. If you are planning to crate train the dog, you may want to bring the crate along as well.
  4. Walk around and interact with the dogs. You don't want to make a decision based only by appearance. If possible, hold the dog and walk it around for a little bit. They may have an area fenced off for you to go and play with the dogs. You will be able to see who is playful and who is just content to sit in the shade.
  5. Adopt a dog that you are interested in. When you have decided you can now begin the adoption process. Typically, you will need to fill out some paperwork with information about yourself and where you live. Depending on who you adopt from, you may need to have the dog spayed or neutered and microchipped.
  6. Make an appointment with a veterinarian to have a check up for the dog. When you get home, you will want to call your veterinarian as soon as possible. No matter what information or paperwork you received on the dog, it is always a good idea to have an examination to make sure he or she is healthy and is up to date on all of its shots.
