As a new business owner, it's important to learn about how to apply for a business credit card. You might need a business credit card to help get your new company off of the ground. Keep in mind that a business credit card company might ask for information about the owner in addition to the business when evaluating the application.

  1. Register as a business with your state. Before you apply for a business credit card, you need to be a registered business. The credit card company may ask to see your business license or other proof of your business status. In fact, in many cases new business owners start to receive business credit card applications after registering.
  2. Get an employer identification number (EIN). To apply for a business credit card, you may have to give an EIN on your application. This number is a social security number for your business.
  3. Enter information about your business' income to apply for a business credit card. Enter the amount of income your business takes in a year, information about the owner, and other pertinent details on the application so that the business credit card company can determine whether it can open a credit line for you.
  4. Submit your business credit card application (online, over the phone, or via mail) and wait for an approval. If you're approved and submit your application online or over the phone the representative will usually tell you right away. Get information about your credit line and wait to receive your business cards in the mail. You can add additional users to your account as well, such as employees or business partners, and order a business credit card for each of them to use.
