If you live or are moving to in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and are having trouble finding housing that you can afford for you and your family, the Homebuyer's Assistance Program can help. The Homebuyer's Assistance Program helps eligible first-time home buyers qualify for a mortgage to purchase homes in certain areas of Baton Rouge. It also provides an additional, interest-free $10,000 loan which can be used for a down payment or closing costs. No payment is required on this loan for ten years. 

  1. Visit the Web site http://brgov.com/Dept/OCD/housing/hap.htm, and ensure that you meet the income and eligibility requirements. You must have good credit and steady income to qualify for this program. The income limits vary depending on the size of your housing, starting at $33,500 for a household of one person and with a maximum of $70,800 for a ten person household.
  2. Find a property for purchase in East Baton Rouge Parish. Only detached single-family housings that cost under $88,000 for existing construction or $93,000 for new construction are eligible for this program.
  3. Contact a loan officer at the City-Parish Office of Community Development by calling 225-389-3039 to make your appointment to apply.
  4. After submitting your application, if you are eligible you will be given a Notice of Eligibility along with a list of private lenders, any of whom can be used to get your mortgage loan. Once you successfully obtain a loan, Baton Rouge will issue you a Home Buyer Loan Agreement.
