Determining how to attach acoustic guitar straps, while not a difficult task, is certainly something that can vary depending on what kind of acoustic guitar you're playing. Different guitars require different kinds of straps, and the method of attaching the strap depends upon how your guitar is designed. Thankfully, there are just a few things to keep in mind when deciding how to attach acoustic guitar straps to your guitar.
To attach acoustic guitar straps, you will need:
- Acoustic guitar
- Determine whether your guitar has two strap buttons. Traditionally, acoustic guitars only have one strap button–the one on the underside of the guitar body directly below the bridge. Some more contemporary models, however, have an additional strap button on top of the body near the neck. Be sure you know whether your acoustic guitar has one or two strap buttons so that you attach the correct type of strap. If you have one strap button, you'll want an acoustic guitar strap with a clean hole on one end and thin strings on the other. On the other hand, if you have two strap buttons, you should be using a strap with a clean hole through each end.
- Attach the strap to the strap button on the body. Find the end of your strap that has a clean hole cut into it. Place that part of the strap onto the strap button located on the underside of the guitar's body so that it fastens around the button. Check to see that it is attached securely, and you're halfway toward knowing how to attach acoustic guitar straps.
- Attach the other end of the strap to the guitar. If your guitar has one strap button, you will tie the strings at the other end of your strap to the guitar's headstock. Be sure you tie them underneath where the guitar strings pass between the nut and the tuning pegs. If you need to know how to attach acoustic guitar straps to an acoustic guitar with two strap buttons, just attach the other end of the strap to the button beside the neck so that it is fastened securely. Do this the same way you attached the strap to the underside of the guitar body. This can be one of the trickiest parts of learning how to attach acoustic guitar straps since the presence of multiple strap buttons affects how you should attach this end of the strap.
- Adjust the strap to your liking. Now that everything is set up and you're comfortable with how to attach acoustic guitar straps, simply adjust the strap so that the guitar fits you comfortably and rests against your body at an appropriate height.
