Need to attach fiberglass to a foam skimboard? Foam skimboards are referred to as "foamies." A skimboard is a smaller counterpart to a surfboard. If the foam of a skimboard is exposed to water, problems can occur. The water breaks down the foam and ruins the board. If you choose to make your own foam skimboard, the process is simple. Once you make the board, you will need to coat it with fiberglass. It may take some time and patience, but it will be worth it in the end!
In order to attach fiberglass to a skimboard, you will need:
- Fiberglass cloth
- Measure your board. You will need to purchase a sheet on fiberglass cloth large enough to cover the board and allow extra space around the edges. Add a couple inches to your measurement.
- Apply the fiberglass cloth directly to the skimboard. Position the sheet of cloth so that is drapes over the edges. Pull the cloth tight around the skimboard and tape all the way around Smooth to release any air pockets.
- Coat the skimboard with resin. Use a brush to gently apply a generous layer of resin to the entire top and sides of the skimboard. Completely cover the fiberglass. This will create the glassy affect. Allow the skimboard to dry for 48 hours.
- Once the board is dry, repeat the process on the other side. Allow to dry for an additional 48 hours. If the foam skimboard is not smooth enough, sand the surface. Reapply more fiberglass and resin. Once you are satisfied, buff and polish the board.
