How To Bat In Cricket
Learning how to bat in cricket is a matter of basic fundamentals and understanding the sport. Batting in cricket takes on many styles but the basic movement of the bat is mostly the same. The basics of cricket batting are to protect your wickets and to score runs.
What you will need for this:
- Batsman
- Cricket bat
- Pitcher
- Wickets
- The basic approach to cricket batting is to strike the cricket ball and protect your wickets. Your stance is the first point in cricket batting that you will need to understand. In protecting your wickets you cannot merely stand in front of them. Your stance must allow visibility of the wickets. Your stance should be that which is comfortable and provides you with the best balance.
- Batting is the simple motion of moving the cricket bat to strike the pitched ball. In cricket this generally means a swing much like golf. The cricket bat will follow a seeping downward to upward motion pushing the cricket ball away from the wickets. The motion should be fluid and can be accomplished from the front or back foot depending on whether you are batting in an offensive or defensive mind set.
- There are five primary ‘styles’ associated with cricket batting. They are ‘drive’ where the batter drives the ball straight ahead off the pitch. ‘Cut’ is where the batter will employ some English or movement of the bat to send the ball in an opposite direction. ‘Pull and hook’ provides a batting style where the batsman will swing perpendicular to the waist at a bouncing cricket ball. ‘Leg glance’ is a last minute turn of the bat towards the legs sending the cricket ball in the opposite direction your opponent may be anticipating. ‘Sweep’ is a most common bat swing taken on a bounce and mimics the ‘drive.’
Tip:
- As with anything there are also variations and personal flair added to cricket batting. Learn the skill and add your own to it down the road.
