How to Be a Good Football Kicker
It is not easy to learn how to be a good football kicker. While many disregard the position as it does not entail the overall athleticism of other positions in football, it is still very crucial in the game. Work on improving your skills will increase your chances of making a team as a kicker.
- Focus on kicking accurately. It makes no difference if you can kick the football far if you are not able to kick is straight. When you are working on accuracy, pay no attention to distance. Trying to kick the football into specific parts of a field goal, or a target if you're not on the field, would be a great way to emphasize accuracy.
- Develop length, but not at the expense of accuracy. Develop kicking power and distance while working on accuracy. Begin kicking longer distances while performing drills on accuracy at increased distances before you move on. Don't kick longer field goals than you will need to at the given level in which you are playing.
- Practice the kickoff. While definitely not as meticulous as field goal kicking, work on kicking the ball off. Spend some time on the onside kick, as you will need to sometime if you are playing competitively.
- Be ready for situations. The kicker doesn't have as many responsibilities as other positions, so you need to be ready for anything. You should know what to do on a bad snap on a field goal attempt, or have some ideas how to stop a returner if you're the last man there.
