How to be mentally prepared for MMA is really up to the individual fighter. What works for some, may not work for others. There are so many different ways that fighters get mentally prepared for the sport; some are superstitious rituals, some are calming techniques, and others just use their natural adrenaline.

  1. Some fighters like Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez really rely on spirituality in order to get mentally prepared for MMA. He even goes so far as to yell "yes" every couple steps as he makes his approach to the octagon. He even makes sure to say a little prayer as he makes his way up the steps and into the octagon. This has proven to be beneficial to him throughout the years, which is truly evident in his record, but this is not the only way.
  2. Others prefer to listen to soothing music to calm themselves down so they can perform with sound mind for the mental aspects of MMA. They try to deter themselves from getting too over anxious and just trying to swing for the fences which at times can prove to be extremely detrimental to the final outcome of a fight.
  3. There are some fighters that absolutely feed off that rage and listen to the hardest metal music they can find to just spark that killer instinct deep inside themselves. This is most commonly done using headphones while they are shadow boxing or lightly sparring with their partner in the dressing room before a fight.
  4. Then there are those that just go into a fight without any mental preparations at all. They know what they are getting into, they feed off of the pre-fight butterflies and just grab the bull by the horns and just go for it.

There really is no exact science to mentally getting prepared for MMA; it all depends on the individual fighter's personality and what works for them.
