It is possible to learn how to become a baseball catcher in just months. With some time you can learn the fundamentals of the position. Becoming a baseball catcher in months will have you being able to compete for a catcher position on a team in no time.
- Learn how to catch the ball behind the plate. It sounds self-evident, yet it is not as simple as learning how to literally catch a ball while crouching down. You need to really develop you ability to stop the ball, especially when it bounces off of the dirt. You also need to be aware of your surroundings, such as when the runner on first takes off for the steal.
- Focus on defensive situations. Catchers need to be able to react to bunts or be ready to block the plate on the close call at home. Work on these situations in order to be ready defensively.
- Work on your throwing. Take some time to develop your throwing arm. You need to be able to deliver the ball quickly from your stance to second or third, and very accurately at that. Spend some time integrating these skills into real situations, so that you are able to perform once you notice a man stealing second or third base.
- Know how to interact with pitchers. You are the leader of the team in the game. You must be ready to handle pitchers that you will be catching. Learn how to interact so that you can calm a pitcher down when needed. It is your job to keep him focused.
