How To Become A Catering Assistant

If you like to cook, learn how to become a catering assistant. A catering assistant job can be an excellent way to earn money, as well as gain valuable experience.  This is especially true if you wish to further your career in the hospitality industry. The advantages to hospitality jobs are that they are highly mobile. Once you have the relevant skills, you can work in an city you choose.

1. Prepare a short resume. Your resume should highlight any skills you may have which are relevant to becoming a catering assistant. If you do not have any formal experience, you can also use volunteering experience as well. The resume should only focus on your skills which are relevant to catering and hospitality.
2. Contact your existing network. If you wish to find a job as a catering assistant, your best option is to speak to people you already know. Often times, many jobs are not formally announced so make sure you ask around. There may be people you know already, who are restaurant or catering company owners.  Keep in mind that if your direct contacts are not hiring, they may know other people in the industry. If you are in school, you can also check with the career office as well, for catering assistant leads.
3. Search the help wanted ads. If you don’t know anyone who is already in the industry, you can check the classified ads for potential catering assistant openings.  If there aren’t any listed positions, don’t give up!  You can try calling each catering firm directly to see if they are hiring.  Be sure to call during slow times and ask for the manager.  In smaller companies, the hiring decision might be made directly by the catering company owner.
4. Prepare to work hard. Catering assistants will have to work long hours. It is important for you to be mentally prepared to give the opportunity your best effort. By working hard as a catering assistant, this can lead to other positions within the company.
