The economy has made people stop and take a long hard look at their finances, more and more people are now trying to learn how to become frugal with their spending habits. This is not an easy task, especially when you consider how most Americans have been living. There are so many different ways to become frugal, these are just a few.

  1. Start at home. If there are luxuries that can be cut at home, that is one of the first steps to become frugal. Cable is not something that is necessary, although most of us have gotten used to having it. Watch movies that you already have or borrow movies from close friends and family.
  2. Secondhand. When it comes to your family's clothing needs, do not be afraid of secondhand stores and yard sales. Part of learning how to become frugal is not being hung up on where something came from. Buying secondhand allows you to be able to get more for your money, therefore providing more for your family and being able to save more.
  3. Think outside of the box. There are many churches that offer food programs that help families get more for their money. You are able to get a good amount of food for a considerably small amount of money. Many people do not think about this, but it can help you on your way to become frugal and you will be surprised at the quality of food you will receive.
  4. Keep account. If you write down everything that you spend daily and what is was on, this can really help you to become frugal. You will be able to see exactly where your money has gone. This surprises people because they are otherwise not conscience of their spending habits.
  5. Coupons. This is definitely one that gets overlooked time and time again. People do not want to take the time to clip and organize coupons, but it is so worth the time and effort it takes. It can almost become a game to see how much money you can actually save. If stores in your area double or triple coupons, you could get many of your items for free.

If you want to become frugal, remember that it is not something that happens overnight. Pretty soon, with a little time and dedication, it will become second nature and you will be well on your way to giving more to your family.
