How To Become A Medical Assistant

Medical assisting is becoming one of the many fast paced careers in the healthcare industry, so if you are interested in this field you will want to know how to become a medical assistant. While some type of schooling or professional training is required for this particular profession, requirements may vary by the state of residence, learning institution, and/or the employer. However, to become a medical assistant there are a few basic steps to become a medical assistant.

1. Training. To become a medical assistant, some type of formal training is necessary. This can include program offerings from a community college, vocational school, and sometimes on the job training. The duration of these programs will depend on the learning institution and some programs may admit on a selective criteria basis. The aspiring student should also keep in mind that not all medical assisting programs are fully accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants.
2. Clinical Hours. Hands on training in a medical setting is needed. The exact number of minimum training hours to become a medical assistant may vary from state to state. Students wishing to sit for the national exam will be advised as to the number of hours necessary. Clinical rounds are performed under the direction of a physician, nurse, or other licensed health care personnel in the healthcare setting.
3. Program Completion/Testing. Upon successful completion of an accredited medical assisting program, the graduate is eligible to set for the national certification exam for medical assistants. This exam is fee based and is the responsibility of the student. While taking this exam is not necessary, many employers require certification prior to becoming a medical assistant in their particular facility.
