Are you a baseball fan wondering how to become an MLB cameraman? In order to accomplish this goal, you must begin your career as early as possible while gaining relevant experience along the way. Check out the steps below if you are interested in pursuing a career as an MLB cameraman.
- Enroll in a four-year college or university, majoring in media production or media broadcasting. A bachelor's degree in media production or broadcasting is a requirement of all top media companies. If you are serious about becoming an MLB cameraman, you must be serious in your studies. In addition to your core requirements, you must take as many production style courses as are available. To be taken seriously in the media world, you must prove that you take your education as seriously as you take potential job offers. Study hard and stay at the top of your class.
- Become involved in the sports broadcasts at your college or university. In each and every college there are programs in which you can learn skills needed in the field. Most college sports departments have football or baseball programs, or both. You should apply with the school media department to be a cameraman with this program. The position may not pay while you are in college, but it will most certainly pay off after graduation. With this experience you can build a portfolio of your work; this will show media companies after graduation that you took the initiative to become involved.
- Apply for an internship with ESPN, WGN, TBS or CSS as an MLB cameraman. Through the internship you will have a mentor who will teach you the valuable skills you will need in the field. You will work with a team that produces and films the MLB games for that particular media group. You should apply for an internship as early as possible as they are quite competitive.
- Apply for a full-time position as an MLB cameraman with a media group that covers MBL games. If you did a great job as an intern, there is a great possibility you will be offered a full-time position. However, do not expect it. Just because you completed the internship with that media group does not guarantee a spot within the organization. After you complete your internship, acquire as many written recommendations as possible. You can submit these with your resume and application. With the skills you learned and your recommendations, you will be well on your way to becoming an MLB cameraman.
