You may also want to determine the length of time it will take to complete the program.
- Get certification. You must choose the correct certification for the specific field in which you wish to work. Your choices include the National Association of Legal Assistants, the National Federation of Paralegal Associations and the American Alliance of Paralegals. Each certification must be renewed after two years, regardless of which you choose.
- Choose a specialization. This decision is based on the area of the paralegal profession you are most interested in. Possible field choices include probate, litigation and real estate. You will want to make sure that you make the right choice for you. Once you have chosen a specialization, you will have to be re-certified in order to work in any other area of this field.
