Trying to learn how to become a physician assistant? Start your career as a physician assistant by making plans to become a physician assistant. As a physician assistant you will be treating patients under a doctor’s supervision in a medical facility. Physician assistants provide a wide variety of health care services to a diverse population of individuals. They treat illnesses, conduct physicals and review medical tests. The average salary is about $80,000 for a physician assistant in the United States.

  1. Read and study how to become a physician assistant and then contact doctors and other physician assistants to find out how they started their career path. Graduate from high school or obtain a GED. Enroll in to a four-year college and select biology or a similar degree program to help you get started. Prepare yourself to study a wide variety of medically related courses to become a physician assistant.
  2. Complete your two or four year degree program with at least a 2.5 grade point average to help you become a physician assistant. Visit the American Academy of Physician Assistants web site to find a program that you can enroll in to become a physician assistant and make sure that the physician assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
  3. Apply for admission to a physician assistant program and upon admission work hard and get to know your advisors and follow their advice and pass all your classes. Study for the national certifying examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and pass this exam and you will become a Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C).
