- Before becoming a tennis coach, pro or otherwise, you need to know all about tennis. You should be eating, sleeping and breathing tennis for years. You need to know all the rules which will be required for matches and competitions and be able to recognize violations. This can be difficult for those just starting out, but through patience, practice and consistency, you will learn the sport quite well and quite fast, with the right motivation.
- Practice coaching. In order to become a pro coach, you need to start somewhere. You can start coaching kids, friends or anyone interested to gain experience and develop good coaching techniques.
- Learn about the body and proper sports nutrition. Having a solid understanding of how to coach pro players to develop important muscles for tennis, and also coach them to supply their bodies with vital nutrients and at what times to eat certain foods, can go a long way in helping develop your coaching style and credibility. Athletes like coaches who have all the answers.
- Get certified as a tennis coach. There are currently two major organizations in the U.S. that certify coaches: the United States Professional Tennis Association and the Professional Tennis Registry. These organizations will help you stay up to date on your sports knowledge and training, and possibly open the doors to finding pro coaching jobs.
