How To Become A Substitute Teacher
Do you want to learn how to become a substitute teacher for kids in high school and or junior high? Or elementary age kids? Substitute teachers usually earn a higher salary than regular school teachers so that is to your advantage. You earn more partially because one of the reasons substitute teachers exist is for last minute teacher absences for doctor appointments, meetings, and sick days.
Some things you'll need to learn about to become a substitute teacher are:
- Higher education. You'll need a degree in teaching. Probably a bachelors degree depending on what grades you want to teach to become a substitute teacher.
- Working with kids. Make sure you really enjoy working with kids of all ages. Substitute teachers work with kids from kindergarten through the more defiant high schoolers.
- College. Look into local colleges to see what is available and what degrees and certification are required, since it may be a little different from school to school when it comes to being a substitute. Be prepared to take the time to work all the way through the educational process. Are you open to the time and effort you'll have to put in to become a substitute teacher?
- Apply. Once it's time to look for substitute teaching jobs, apply everywhere. Include any volunteer sub work you have done on your resume.
-
Expect the unexpected. When you're a sub, kids aren't familiar with you or your teaching style. So, if you go through with your dream of being a substitute teacher, be ready to make things fun and flexible, yet make sure you're taken seriously.
These are just a few basic things to keep in mind when learning how to become a substitute teacher. It also depends on whether you want to focus on science, history, music or another specific subject. You'll still have to have basic education down since you could be asked to sub for any teaching position.
