It’s not for everyone, but knowing how to become vegetarian properly can help make the transition easy. Becoming vegetarian is a great step towards being kinder to animals and eating healthier. Making a big change in your eating habits like becoming vegetarian can be a difficult task. By following some easy tips, your journey to vegetarianism can be a pleasant experience.
- Find out more. Before you can become vegetarian, it is a good idea to find out more about it. Search online to read about vegetarianism. Go to the bookstore and look for books on becoming vegetarian and cooking vegetarian recipes. Talk to your vegetarian friends and ask them questions. The more you know about what being a vegetarian is, the easier it will be for you to make the change.
- Have good reasons. Take the time to really think and figure out why it is you want to become vegetarian. Is it because of your beliefs? Do you want to be more kind to animals by no longer eating meat? Do you want to be vegetarian to start eating healthier? Those are all great valid reasons to become vegetarian. However, if you find your reasons are just for fun, because you’re bored, or maybe to impress someone; you may not be doing it for the right reasons.
- Start off slowly. Becoming vegetarian is not going to be easy so don’t be afraid to start off slow. You can’t expect to become vegetarian overnight so rather than throwing everything out of your pantry and refrigerator that isn’t veggie friendly, remember that you need to make a slow change. You don’t need to eat only vegetarian foods from day one, just take your time and you will get there.
- Stop buying meat. A great way to start on your way to being a vegetarian is by no longer buying meat. If you still have meat at home you can finish eating what you have because you shouldn’t waste food but don’t buy anymore. Making the transition to vegetarianism will be easier when you are not adding any new meat to the house.
- Eliminate one meat at a time. It will be hard to stop eating all meat at once so instead you can eliminate one meat at a time. Maybe on your first week you cut out beef and once you’re accustomed without it, you can remove another meat from your diet such as pork. You can take a week or even a month to remove a meat from your diet; it’s all based on what you’re comfortable with. You’ll gradually remove all meat and be on your way to becoming vegetarian.
- Substitute meats with faux meat. No longer eating meat when you become vegetarian can be a shock, so help yourself by eating faux meat. There are many products in grocery stores now that are meat substitutes. You can find faux ground beef, faux chicken, faux fish, and more. The meat substitutes are completely meatless so they are vegetarian friendly and can be eaten instead of your favorite meats.
- Make vegetarian versions of meals. Just because you’ve become vegetarian doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favorite meals. A great way to go vegetarian is by recreating your favorite meals but making them veggie friendly. Instead of making steak chili, you can cook up some vegetarian chili. Replace your hot dogs with veggie hot dogs. Use meatless ground beef for your tacos instead of real ground beef. The choices are endless.
