Whether you are running for leisure or practicing for a five mile run, there are basics to know on how to begin running. Running is a great physical activity that will get you in shape and keep you healthy. If you are just starting out, here are a few guidelines to know how to begin running.

You will need:

  • running shoes
  • sweat pants
  • T-shirt
  1. Be fitted for running shoes. You will need to have a comfortable pair of running shoes. They should have good support around the heel and be well cushioned. This will help absorb the shock on your feet from impact. Make sure the shoes fit properly; if they are the wrong size, they will cause your feet to ache and get blisters. You might even fall and trip frequently if the shoes don't fit properly.
  2. Dress comfortably. You don't want to wear jeans or stiff clothes to begin running. They will make you sweat more and be uncomfortable. Wear a loose fitting shirt and sweat pants to begin running.
  3. Run on a soft surface if possible. Grass and running tracks are the best surfaces to run on. This will help with the impact it places on your lower body.
  4. Begin running with a friend. Whether it be a spouse, a close friend or relative, you will have more fun running with someone else, and it will make it seem a whole lot easier and enjoyable.
  5. Do some warm up exercises. Stretch your muscles, especially your legs. Do some ankle rotations. Ten minutes of warm up exercises should be sufficient enough to prevent injuries.
  6. Begin running at a slow speed. It is important to start off slow and work yourself up. You don't want to overdue it. When it comes to running, it is how long you run that matters, not how fast or how far you went. The longer you keep your heart rate up the more health benefits you will gain.
  7. Cool down. You can cool down by walking and stretching your muscles again. If you can't run the whole distance you wish to, try changing between walking and running. Walk for a few minutes then run for a few minutes. Keep doing this on a regular basis and you will work yourself up to longer periods of running. It is important to remember these guidelines when you want to know how to begin running.
