Learning how to BMX in the dirt is much like riding on flatland with a few notable differences. Riding a BMX on dirt takes tires with better grip. Riding BMX on dirt takes more concentration when hitting turns. Learning how to BMX on dirt isn’t difficult, it is just different. The gear needed for riding a BMX on dirt is different as well. You will want to have goggles and a helmet that covers the mouth. Gearing up for riding BMX on dirt is much like motocross. The speed isn’t there with BMX as much as it is with motocross, but many of the same pitfalls are. 

To BMX in the dirt, you will need:

  • BMX bike
  • Proper tires
  • BMX dirt protective gear
  • Dirt

How to BMX in the dirt:

  1. Learning to ride BMX in the dirt requires balance and quick reflexes. You need to ensure you have the proper gear on and tires. Thicker thread tires should be used on both front and back wheels.
  2. Maintain a center of balance and a firm grip in the handlebars. Keep your center of gravity slightly forward as this will assist in turns. Your feet must remain on the peddle at all times to manage the BMX bike.
  3. Move into your motions, start or turns slowly and with your center of gravity flush. Keep your head up and your wits about you. Dirt is loose and improper balance and weight shift can cause you to slip or spin.
