Curious about how to BMX, and grind in particular? Everyone who owns a BMX bike needs to learn how to do a BMX grind. Before attempting a BMX grind, you need to make sure you feel comfortable with your bike and that you can do a simple bunny hop without difficulty. The following guide will teach you how to do a grind on your BMX bike.

To do a BMX grind, you will need:

  • A BMX bike
  • A helmet
  • Elbow and knee pads
  • A surface to grind on
  1. First, you need to ride up to the obstacle you intend to grind on at a moderate speed. Don't get going too fast on your first try, but don't go so slow that a grind will not be possible.
  2. Next, do a bunny hop so that your front wheel pops up higher than your back wheel. You will need to land on the obstacle such that your front tire hits the obstacle and your back tire peg hits the obstacle as well. You must choose an obstacle that is at least eighteen inches off the ground so that a grind is possible.
  3. Make sure that you keep your front wheel straight and your weight positioned over the edge of your obstacle. This should help you keep the proper balance so that you do not fall off.
  4. When you reach the end of your obstacle or you are no longer moving at a speed that allows for a grind, you will need to dismount the obstacle. To dismount an obstacle, you will need to turn your handlebars away from the obstacle and do a bunny hop to remove your back tire. Once you hit the ground, ride away in style!
