How To Boogie Board Successfully

By: Melanie Dee

Learning how to boogie board successfully takes a bit of practice, and wipe outs are pretty common. You don't want to look like a total fool in front of others when you try it out for the first time, so you don't have to worry much about others pointing and laughing at you; unless of course you are surfing in a bay where waves are no higher than a foot or 2.

  1. Like surfboards, boogie boards are also designed with weight and height in mind, so buy one that is designed for your appropriate weight class, and height. If you are unsure about what boogie board would be best for you, visit a local surf shop, or cruise online forums and ask other boarders.
  2. To really successfully boogie board, a pair of swim fins would be a good idea to have. Swim fins will allow you to position yourself where you need to be when a wave begins to roll in.
  3. You will need to paddle out past the break in order to avoid getting hurt, and to catch the best sets of waves.
  4. Once you are out past the break, position yourself facing the shore, so you are ready for takeoff for when the wave rolls in. Always look over your shoulder though at what is coming up behind you.
  5. When you see a large enough wave, begin to quickly paddle and kick towards shore.
  6. You will feel the wave roll in up under you, and begin to pull your boogie board.
  7. Hold on to the board, and angle yourself around when you are getting some speed in order to cut the wave.
  8. That is all there is to it. Again, wipe outs will be common for newer boogie boarders, but older ones get sucked into the washing machine sometimes too.
