How To Break In A New Baseball Glove

It is important to know how to break in a new baseball glove before you use it in a practice or a game. New baseball gloves tend to be very rigid and stiff because the leather that is used in the glove has not been broken it. This can affect your ability to catch the ball. There are several ways to break in a new baseball glove.

To break in a new baseball glove, you will need:

  • Glove
  • Baseball
  • An oven
  • Cookie sheet
  • Leather conditioner

  1. Play catch with your new glove. One of the best ways to break in your new baseball glove is to play catch with it at least 20 minutes a day for two weeks. This makes the leather of the glove softer and also allows it to form to your hand.
  2. Place your glove in the oven. To speed up the breaking in process, you can use an oven to soften the leather. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees. Turn the oven off and place the glove on a cookie sheet in the oven for 10 minutes. Do not leave the glove unattended in the oven.
  3. Carefully remove the baseball glove from the oven. The glove will be hot, so use caution. Once the glove is cool enough to pick up, take the new glove off of the cookie sheet.
  4. Rub the glove down with a leather conditioner. You can use a baseball glove conditioner which can be found at any sporting goods store. Follow the directions on the label.
  5. Massage the glove to loosen the leather. Using your hands, work the glove in different directions to loosen the leather and break in your new baseball glove. Do this for about 10 minutes or until the leather feels softer and more flexible.
