How To Budget Finances

Learning how to budget finances is a key part of being an adult. Budgeting is as simple as knowing how much money you have coming in and where you are spending your money. Many people really do not know where their money is going each month. Most households are spending more than what they are making each month. But with proper budgeting, you'll be able to reach your long term financial goals painlessly.

  1. Know your income. Knowing your income is not just understanding how much you’re receiving from your paycheck, it is knowing everything you having coming in such as child support, dividends, alimony, bonuses and interest income. When you understand how much you earn then you can accurately calculate how much you are able to spend.
  2. Know your outgoing expenses. The best way to figure out where your money routinely goes is by tracking your spending for one month. Write down every thing you spend no matter how small. Then create your categories for your budget by including housing (rent or mortgage), recurring bills (electric, water, cable, insurance, phone and credit card payments), and food and miscellaneous. Your vehicle should have a category of its own by including payments, maintenance, gas etc. It is imperative that you track your spending to truly have a clear picture of your spending habits. Don't overlook any expense even if its simply buying a soda at the local convenience store. It is an expense and you must record it. Also, incorporate any entertainment costs such as eating out and entertaining company at your home.
  3. Know what is necessary. Often we find that we are carrying cost of things that are not necessary. At this point, it is important to discover your wants and needs. For example, if you have the deluxe cable package with over 700 channels, well that is a want not a need. Get real with yourself and carefully scrutinize every expense then start shaving off the unnecessary costs. Review your bills and determine what can you reduce. Shop around for different cell phone carriers or insurance. There are often specials and many deals these days available. See if there are discounts through your job. Leave no rock unturned when hunting for deals
  4. Create spending habits. Changing bad spending habits will take time and patience. Many people give up when at first they don’t succeed but you know how the saying goes, “try, try again." Continue to write down everything you spend your money on because if it isn’t written then it didn’t happen.  Well, in our minds it didn’t happen. Plan ahead for extra spending events such as Christmas, birthdays and vacations. Look for ways to bring in extra income and look for layaway plans when at all possible. Learn to be patient and not impulsive. And once, you have created a workable budget continue to re-evaluate it annually.
