How To Budget For A Vacation With Friends

Planning how to budget for a vacation with friends can be quite exciting, especially as the day draws nearer. Traveling with friends can be fun, but details regarding the vacation will have to be discussed beforehand including budgeting, which can be a touchy subject. Everyone will have to be in complete agreement with the final decisions in order for the trip to run smoothly.

  1. Decide how funds will be split. Before you begin anything when budgeting for a vacation with friends, you must decide how the funds will be split. Will everything be split evenly? Or will people contribute what they are able? Will people be responsible for themselves? Will one person pay for gas while the other pays for food? It is wiser to divide the budget into percentages. Otherwise, if you're the one paying for food, your friends might order twin lobster tails and a twenty ounce filet mignon. More often than not, friends will decide to split all, or most, expenses evenly.
  2. Begin planning the trip. Begin by getting a rough estimate of the cost of the vacation. Find out what hotels cost in the area of your intended destination. What do attractions cost in the area? Will you be dining at nice restaurants or cooking for yourselves? How long will you be staying? How are you traveling to your destination? All these questions must be decided among your friends. Budgeting for a vacation with friends will be difficult unless you can come to an agreement on these things.
  3. Determine if the trip is affordable. Once you have a rough estimate, you will need to determine if your trip is affordable. If it isn't, you can either wait until you and your friends save up the funds or you can rework the budget; sit down with your friends and determine what can be cut out. Five nights at the Holiday Inn will be much cheaper than five nights at the Hilton. Look for free, yet fun, attractions in the area. Sacrifice one night at that five-star restaurant for a smaller, cheaper local favorite. There are many ways to cut down expenses.
  4. Make a final budget. Once you have everything set in place, you and your friends can make a final budget for the vacation. Decide exactly which hotel or other accommodations, you'll have. Plan out how much can be spent on food and attractions per day. Decide exactly what costs will be split and how they will be divided.
  5. Make the reservations. Once all the budgeting is complete, you can make final reservations. Don't forget to have fun!
