Learning how to build the fastest automatic air tennis ball gun is fun and can save you a lot of money if you’re an avid tennis player. You want to increase your tennis game and need the fastest tennis ball gun on the market; then why not build it yourself. Below you will find simple, affordable, and fun instructions on making a tennis ball gun that will suit your needs. Before starting you must first gather the required materials below. The base will be made of Polyvinyl Chloride also known as PVC. PVC is strong, durable, and easy on the pocket.
Materials needed:
- 18 inches in length with 4 inch diameter PVC pipe
- 4 inch diameter PVC pipe cap
- 4 inch PVC reducer coupling
- 2 inch pieces of 3inch diameter PVC pipe
- 3 inch PVC pipe Valve
- 2 3 inch PVC pipe elbows
- 48 inches of 3 inch PVC pipe
- Schrader valve
- PVC primer
- PVC cement
- Wrench
- Teflon Tape
- Drill
- Paintbrush
- Tennis Balls
- Air pump
- Drill a hole on the eighteen-inch PVC pipe that is slightly smaller in size than the diameter of the Schrader valve. This small metal fitting allows air to be pumped in the tennis ball gun.
- Wrap one of the ends of the Schrader valve with a few layers of Teflon tape, then push the valve in the hole that you have previously drilled.
- Tighten the valve hand tight, then use your wrench. The Teflon tape helps hold the pressure of the air that the tank pumps up and gives it a secure hold during the launch of the tennis ball.
- Use the PVC primer and PVC glue to coat the ends of the piece you just drilled the vales into. Use the four-inch cap on one the ends of the pipe.
- Take the three-inch elbows and attach them to the other side of the pipe cap you just attached. Use primer and glue and coat it on each end to secure its stability. On the opposite end glue the three inch PVC pipe valve.
- Glue another two inch length of three-inch pipe to the valve that you just glued. Now, attach it to the elbow that was used in the prior step.
- Grab another two inch pipe and attach it to the one you just added in step six. Make a 180 turn making a "U" shape. Use primer and glue to secure it tight.
- Attach the 48-inches of 3-inch PVC pipe to the other end of the U shape. This becomes the barrel of your gun.
- Now you are ready to stuff the barrel with tennis balls. Before you do, stuff a rag down the barrel to absorb the pressure from the release of the air pump. With a stick shove the rag and tennis balls as far down as you can. Now, close the valve tightly.
- Close the PVC pipe and using the air pump attach it to the Schrader valve. Pump in to a pressure of 60 to 100 pounds per square inch.
- Now your ready to shoot away and practice your tennis swing. Make sure your shooting area is clear and away from people and only in the directions of your swinging range.
- A PVC air gun will fire a tennis ball hard enough to hurt a person and/or damage any structure around its path. Check with your local police department if there's any regulation against launching devices in your area.
