Many people wonder how to build a hot tub. This is because hot tubs are relaxing, fun, and really expensive. Building your own hot tub can be challenging, but it is definitely not impossible. The following guide will help you learn the basics of building your own hot tub.

To build a hot tub, you will need:

  • Wood or hay bales and a plastic liner
  • Firewood or a radiator
  • Piping
  • A furnace or metal pot
  1. The first step to building your own hot tub is to decide whether you want to use wood or hay bales to form the base.  Many people prefer wooden hot tubs, but obtaining large amounts of wood can be difficult.  Hay bales are a cheap way to create edges for a hot tub, but must be covered with a plastic pond or pool liner.  Choose one of these two methods and construct the base of the hot tub.
  2. The next step to build a hot tub is choosing what kind of heating system you desire.  A radiator is an effective means of heating hot tub water, but can sometimes be too hot or too difficult to maintain for many hot tub owners.  A furnace can be an effective choice, because it burns firewood, which is relatively cheap and produces a large amount of heat.
  3. If you choose to build a hot tub using a radiator, you will need to create piping that can run the water to the radiator and then back into the hot tub.  You may want to create a more indirect route back to the hot tub, if you do not want the water to be extremely hot.  If you choose to build a hot tub using a fire burning furnace, you will need to create piping to run water into a pot, which heats over a fire.  The water must then be routed back into the hot tub to keep it warm.
  4. Test the temperature of the water before using the hot tub to avoid burns.
