To get a good rate on your loans and insurance, you need to know how to build your credit score. With a positive credit score, you can get credit when you need it and get better deals on the credit you do get. It is also helpful when applying for a job, as many employers do screen prospects for their credit score.

  1. Build your credit score by getting credit and using it. To show credit reporting agencies that you are responsible with credit, you have to show them that you can borrow money and then pay it back as agreed. If you have no credit, you may be able to get a student credit card or a store credit card. Use the card to make small purchases each month and build your credit score by making on-time payments every billing cycle. A store credit card will generally have exorbitant interest rates, so make sure that you pay off your debt monthly.
  2. Get a secured credit card if you have no other credit options. These are credit cards that works just like a regular card, but you submit a deposit with the company before the card is issued. This deposit ensures that even though you are a bad credit risk, the company will not lose money on the arrangement. You can build your credit score by establishing a good relationship with the secured credit card company, paying your bills on time and earning extra credit beyond your original deposit.
  3. Rent items to build your credit score. Renting a car, furniture or appliances is a form of credit. If you pay your rent on time, you will help to build your credit score and earn the right to take on more credit and more financial responsibility.
