Learning how to bunt a baseball is essential to be a complete baseball player.  In many situations it is important to know how to bunt a baseball in order to move a runner into scoring position.  It remains one important fundamental in baseball.

  1. Prepare to bunt while the pitcher is in his or her windup.  You will want to get into proper position, as will be described, in the pitcher's motion.  This will give the fielders only a short amount of time to react to the possible bunt.  Unless it is very obvious you are going to bunt, such as if you are a pitcher, you will want to wait to allow the defense to prepare.
  2. Get your feet ready by stepping closer to the plate.  You want to take a step to the plate with your lead foot.  This will allow you to get closer to the ball, in order to make better contact and to see the ball better.
  3. Place your dominant hand behind the barrel.  You will want to hide it behind the barrel, in order to ensure contact.  Compress your hand so that you lessen the chance of the ball hitting your hand.
  4. Attempt to make contact at a good pitch.  Make sure the pitch is near the strike zone, as others can increase the chance of a foul ball, popup, or failure to make contact.  You want to make sure that you aren't taking a cut at the baseball.  Simply place the bat over the plate and adjust accordingly.  Taking a cut at the baseball can have undesirable effects, which will result in an unsuccessful bunt.
