There are so many options available that learning how to buy a big screen TV is extremely important. You can spend anywhere from five hundred dollars up to $25 thousand dollars or more on your new big screen TV. Make sure you spend that money well by assessing what your particular needs are before you head to the electronics store.

  1. Determine your budget. The first thing to consider when getting ready to purchase a big screen TV is how much money you want to spend. There are several factors that will ultimately determine the cost of the TV; the size and type of the TV are the most important. The biggest TV that you can afford may not be the best option. That is why you should figure out what you are comfortable spending first.
  2. How big is big enough? The next thing to take into account is size. When you get to the store, it is tempting to buy the biggest TV that you can. The size of the big screen TV you choose will depend on the space you have available in your home. Decide where the TV will go. If you are planning to hang it on the wall, it can even be helpful to tape a piece of cardboard cut to the size of the TV you are considering on the wall where it will be mounted. Live with it for a day or two before purchasing the TV. You may decide that you should go smaller or bigger than you initially planned.
  3. Choose the right type of TV. There are several different types of TVs available today. Direct view or cathode-ray tube TVs are the standard television sets that most people had up until a few years ago. They are the most reliable TVs on the market and deliver the best picture quality next to plasmas; however, because of their weight they are limited in size. Flat panel TVs are another option. There are two main types of flat panels, plasma and liquid crystal display or LCD. Both have their pros and cons. Plasma TVs tend to have a better picture than LCDs, but they are more expensive and have a shorter life span. LCD TVs are less expensive and have a longer life span, but the picture quality is not as good as a plasma TV.

When choosing a new big screen TV, you will need to evaluate what aspects are most important to you. Whether you want the biggest screen and are willing to sacrifice picture quality or you would be happy with a smaller screen and the best picture possible, it is entirely up to you. Visit an electronics store and look at all the options. Just remember that technology is continually advancing and what may be the latest and greatest today, can become outdated very quickly.
