How To Buy A Bike
Before you try to figure out how to buy a bike, you will first need to figure out a few things about what type of bike you want. Think about what is most important to you in a bike and how much you are willing to negotiate that point when you buy a bike. Consider how you want to go about finding a bike and how much effort you want to put into your search.
To make an educated decision about buying a bike, you will need:
- Information on the bike types and models you are interested in
- Knowledge of what type of riding you will be doing (mountain trails, flat or hilly streets, etc.)
- A price range
- A decision on whether you want a new or used bike
- First, look through some catalogs, internet sites or at bike shops to see what bike models are available. You may think that you want a mountain bike but then realize that a hybrid or cruiser is more to your taste. Remember that while mountain bikes can be used for all types of riding, cruisers and racing bikes have more specific uses.
- Once you have decided on the type of bike that you want, think about how much money you want to spend to buy your bike. If you want to bike short distances or bike casually, you probably do not want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a professional-style bike. If you plan to do a lot of biking, you may want to invest in a nicer model.
- With your price range in mind, consider whether you want to buy a bike new or used. New bikes are in better condition than used bikes are, but if you find a bike that you like new you can possibly find the same bike used for much cheaper. If you know that the used bike is in excellent condition, you may want to go with the used one over the new one.
- Go to bike shops and try riding bikes similar to ones you are interested in. Most bike shops have no problem allowing potential buyers to take a bike or two out for a test ride. You may even decide to buy a bike on the spot.
- If you decide not to buy a bike at a bike shop, look for bikes on the internet and elsewhere. There are plenty of online bike shops, so you can likely find your dream bike online. If you really want to look for a deal, consider checking for bikes on marketplace or auction sites, asking friends or going to garage sales.
