How To Buy Ski Boots

If you are new to skiing and are wondering how to buy ski boots, try not to get too intimidated. The first hurdle you will need to face is getting yourself correctly sized. Once you have an accurate size, don't be afraid to try on every boot in the store in order to find one that is comfortable for you.

  1. Visit a reputable ski shop and have the store's bootfitter help size your feet. The bootfitter will measure the length and width of your feet in order to obtain the most accurate boot size.

  2. Consider your skiing ability when looking at boots. A beginner skier will want a more comfortable, slightly more flexible boot. Expert skiers tend to prefer stiffer, tighter boots for greater maneuverability.

  3. Look at the features that each boot offers such as velcro straps or micro-adjustable straps which can be used for a more precise fit.

  4. Try on the ski boots' outer shell first to see how well they fit. There should be no more than ¾” between the heel of your foot and the back of the ski boot.

  5. Test fit the ski boots' shell liner. The front of the liner should barely touch your toes. Also, check to make sure that your feet aren't stretching out the sides of the liner.

  6. Put the liner back in the shell of the boot and try it all on together to see how the boot feels.

  7. Bend your legs at the knee while wearing the boot and check to see how the boot cuff feels against your legs. There should be very little flexibility in the cuff of the boot.

  8. Try on the boot in the store and walk around for 10 minutes or so to break it in.

  9. Remove the boots and wait several minutes before putting them back on again. How do the boots feel when you put them back on? Ideally, they should feel roomier as they are broken in and form deep heel pockets for your feet.

Tip:

Make sure you bring your ski socks with you so that you can get a boot that fits your feet correctly.
