How to Buy Used Cars
With the economy as bad as it is, many are now wondering how to buy used cars. Buying used cars has its advantages. It can be a smarter investment to buy used versus new. If only it had that new car smell.
- Decide what kind of vehicle you need or want. Before you can start looking at cars, you should first consider what it is you need. If you have a family of 7, you're going to need a large vehicle. If you're going to be travelling a lot, you should look for something reliable that will last a long time. You can begin by narrowing your search based on necessities. Then you can further narrow your search based on preferences. You might be determined to have a specific make or model, or a certain color, or maybe you just want something with a sunroof. Just have it clear in mind what you want before you begin your search.
- Search web sites for your car. The Internet is an excellent place to begin looking for a used car. Sites such as Craigslist or AutoTrader are really great sources for finding used vehicles. You can also look at inventory online for certain dealerships. Some of the smaller dealerships might not have web sites, so you might have to spend time visiting them and taking a look around, or making a phone call and ask questions about their inventory.
- Check the vehicle history and take it for a spin. Once you find a car that suits your needs, it's important to get a little background history. Many dealerships will give you a history report. If not, you should buy one. It will tell you if it's been in any reported accidents, how many owners it's had, what states it's been registered, what maintenance or repairs have been done to the car, etc. This is all very important in determining the actual value, and reliability of the vehicle. You'll also want to take the car for a test drive. Make sure there are no bad sounds, test the breaks, make a sharp turn, test the lights, radio, windshield wipers and other mechanical aspects of the vehicle. This is one of the most important parts of buying a used car. You may also consider taking the car to a mechanic to check out the car and see if everything is in working condition.
- Make a final decision. If you are purchasing from a dealership, they will help walk you through the paperwork and financing options. If you are purchasing from a private seller, you will have to check with your state laws regarding title changes, taxes, and vehicle registration.
