You can figure out how to calculate federal income tax online very efficiently. There are two ways to accomplish this. You can use a regular tax form and figure out the math on your own or you can simply visit a website that estimates your taxes for the following year. There are lots of these sites and the best part is that it is completely free! All you need to do is estimate your income and deductions or use your tax information from the previous year. This can be extremely helpful in evaluating how much you need to pay in taxes before tax season. You can also use this just to figure out how much taxes you will be paying when you file. The best way to go about this is to find an online filing site and fill out the required information. Lots of companies other free online filing if you meet their income requirements. There is a charge sometimes for filing your state income taxes. If you prefer not to pay the fee, you can still file just your federal return and file your state income tax by mailing it to the correct tax department in your state.

  1. Gather all of your tax documents. You will need your income from the previous year or what you expect to make in the coming year.
  2. Figure out what you will be claiming as deductions. Things like moving for a job, a new child, new home, are things you should include as deductions. These changes can really add up to a lot of money.
  3. Visit an online tax site. Some to consider are Turbo Tax, H & R Block Free File, Free Tax USA, etc. All of them are equally good and very easy to use.
  4. Input the required information. You will be asked about your income, deductions, and residence.
  5. The website will then give you your tax liability for the upcoming or previous years.
