If you have just gotten your first tattoo, you may be looking for information on how to care for a tattoo. Caring for a tattoo is simple, just a few quick steps and it will stay bright and vibrant for years to come. One thing to remember, though, is that new tattoos may bleed slightly. They generally will peel as the new skin is formed to protect the damaged skin.

To care for a tattoo, you will need:

  • petroleum jelly
  • bandage
  • light exfoliant
  • sunscreen
  1. Sun/Sunscreen. First and foremost, to care for the coloring of your tattoo stay out of the sunlight to prevent your tattoo from fading. Just as the sunlight can lighten your hair or fade paint on a car, it can also fade the coloring of your tattoo. Fading would not be noticed all at once, but over time, the colors will begin to fade and look dull.
  2. Petroleum jelly. Keep new tattoos moist with petroleum jelly. This will help prevent excessive peeling from occurring around the tattoo.
  3. Bandage. If you got your new tattoo on a part of your body that is under clothing or where they may rub with your shoes, you will want to cover them with bandages. You will also want to cover the tattoo to protect your clothing from the petroleum jelly.
  4. Exfoliate. Once your tattoo is completely healed, you will want to use a light exfoliant to remove any remaining dead and dried skin cells. A light exfoliation will also help promote the new skin growth. Exfoliating before the tattoo is completely healed may cause irritation to the area.
