You are dying to learn how to catch a wave, but it looks difficult, so you need some surfing tips for beginners. You see surfers break through rough surf in order to get to a deep area in the sea where waves are rolling in in sets, and they make it look so simple. Yet, when you try surfing, you fail. Below you will find some tips for how to catch a wave.

  1. Your surfboard should always have a decent coating of surf wax on it. This will allow you a better grip on your board while surfing, and keep it from slipping away whenever you try to swim out past the rougher breaks near shore. You can get surf wax at any surf shop, or online for under $5.00.
  2. Swim out past the break. You can't learn surfing in a break, nor will you be able to catch a wave. If the break is really rough, take your time, and don't try to fight strong currents, you will only tire yourself out. If you feel the ocean is too rough for you, do not push yourself, just get out and wait for tides to change.
  3. Once you have made it past the break, position yourself looking towards shore, or to the side, always looking over your shoulder for when a good wave is about to roll in.
  4. Once you see a decent wave heading in at you, begin to quickly paddle towards shore.
  5. As the wave rolls nearer you will feel the board begin to move, you can now stand up.
  6. Ride the wave positioning yourself from either left or right.
  7. Keep your knees bent while surfing.
  8. Enjoy the ride! Surfing is fun.
  9. Repeat.
