How To Celebrate Hanukkah
New to Judaism, and need to know how to celebrate Hanukkah? Every year the celebration of Hanukkah takes place for eight festive nights, lighting of candles, songs and delicious food. This Jewish holiday is a commemoration to the miracles that took place while the Jewish people defeated the Seleucids over twenty centuries ago. They needed oil to burn for light, but only had enough to burn for one day, but somehow the oil lasted for eight whole days, and now the Jewish people celebrate with Hanukkah. To celebrate with your family follow these simple traditions and you can celebrate Hanukkah too!
- Hanukkah is traditionally celebrated during December. But sometimes the holiday starts in November. However Hanukkah always starts on the 25th day of the Jewish month Kislev (the traditional Jewish calendar is pretty much based on the lunar calendar).
- To begin you need a menorah, and eight candles. The first candle you will be using is called the Shamash, This candle's purpose is solely for lighting all the other candles.
- Each night you will light one candle, until all candles on the menorah are lit. You should light your candleevery night, shorly after sundown.
- The order in which you set up the candles is right to left. However, you then light the candles left to right. Do this every night until all eight candles are lit.
- While celebrating Hanukkah it is customary to eat fried foods. This is because you use oil to cook the fried food with, which represents the oil miracle that had taken place.
-
It is also customary to give charities during the holiday and/or exhancge gifts with loved ones.
