How To Celebrate LGBT History Month
If you've recently been interested in gay-rights and civil-rights movements, you may want to know how to celebrate LGBT history month. As each country is different, many Western societies around the globe celebrate LGBT history month during different periods. LGBT history month generally coincides with a monumental occasion in the history of gay-rights (such as October and NCOD in the United States).
- Read up on the history of the LGBT movement. All in all, LGBT history month is all about the social-activism and history of the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender movement within Western context (and even, sometimes, around the world). Discrimination, violence, and even execution and torture have been long standing punishments for those who don't identify correctly with heterosexual cultures around the globe. Read up on the Human Rights Campaign's website where they have a whole history, with critique, on the subject matter. Various television specials will probably air during this month so don't be a stranger to those interesting gay-rights documentaries.
- Join in on the fun. Many LGBT groups throw festivals, parties, or rallies to promote awareness of the gay struggle and its history during this time. LGBT history month is celebrated at different times around the world (October in the U.S., February in the U.K.) so pay attention to the date. LGBT history month is also bound to have fun social activities for those interested in getting involved with the movement.
- Get the word out. Lots of people are interested in LGBT history month, but few know about it or what its context is. You can celebrate LGBT history month in the best way by getting the word out for a good cause.
- Get some friends together. Friends and family make for perfect guests to a festival for LGBT history month. You'll learn some valuable cultural information, be more socially-aware, maybe educate your loved ones a little, and (of course) have tons of fun!
You can host your own event or attend another one during LGBT history month. The important thing about it is that you celebrate LGBT history month by paying attention to the struggles of the many who have came before, and faced opposition to their sexual preferences.
