Need to know how to change the computer name in Windows XP?  It is easier than you think.  Just a couple of steps and it is done.  Before starting you will want to make sure that changing your computer name will not cause any issues with your network.  If it is connected to a network, I would recommend talking with your network administrator before beginning.  Ok let's get started.

Changing computer name in XP

  1. My computer icon.  If you don't see the computer icon on the desktop you can locate it under the start menu.  After locating the computer icon you will want to right-click the computer icon.  After right-clicking you will see a gray pop up window.  Next you will want to left-click properties.  This will bring up a new window.
  2. System Properties window.  You will see many tabs listed in this window.  The tab you are looking for is Computer Name; click this tab.
  3. Computer Name tab.  You will see a statement as follows: "To rename this computer or join a domain, click Change."  Next to this line you will see a change button.  Click the change button.
  4. Computer name text box.  You will see a new window open up called Computer Name Changes.  The only field you are concerned with is the Computer Name text box.  You will see a name already in the text box.  Just delete this name and enter a new name of your choice.  Click OK, then click Apply and then click OK again.  Next the computer will ask to "restart now."  Go ahead and restart the computer and you will see that you changed the computer name successfully.
