If you want Google’s slick new browser, make sure you know how to change default browser to Google Chrome so your computer knows which browser you want to use to search the internet. Setting your default will make all links and shortcuts you click open up in the browser of your choosing. Not only is this more convenient for you, it will make your computer run much, much faster to have only one browser running at a time.

While other browsers will warn you if they are not set to default, Chrome doesn’t so you’ll have to set it manually. Luckily, it’s not that hard. The steps to changing your default browser are similar regardless of the web browser you are in choosing. Simply open up the browser of your choice, find the “Options” area, and set it as your default. Here are the steps for setting your default to Google Chrome.

  1. Open Google Chrome If you haven’t downloaded it yet, do that now. Then open up the browser; it doesn’t matter what website you are at.
  2. Tools -> Options In the top right hand corner of the browser window to the right of the address bar, click on the small, blue wrench icon. From the drop down menu that appears, choose “Options.”
  3. Set Default Browser In the window that appears, click “Make Google Chrome my default browser.” On most operating systems, your browser will not be set to Google Chrome.
  4. On Vista If you are running Windows Vista, you will receive a “User Account Control” prompt after clicking “Make Google Chrome my default browser.” Click affirmative to set your default browser.
