How To Change IP Address

Learning about how to change an IP address is important for computer networking. If you already know what the IP address is that you want to set, then it is not to difficult to do. Most people won't need to change their IP address manually, but if you do, follow these steps.

What you will need

  • Computer running Windows
  • An IP address and default gateway information for your network

For Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Click the Start button and open the Control Panel. These are located on the lower left side of your computer. 
  2. Go to Network and Internet.
  3. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  4. On the left, choose the option to change adapter settings.
  5. Right click the network adapter and choose properties.
  6. In the list, scroll to find the option Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  7. Select it and click Properties below.
  8. Click the option to Use the following IP address:
  9. In the top box, enter the IP address.
  10. In the second box enter the subnet mask, which will probably be the default 255.255.255.0.
  11. In the third box enter the default gateway.
  12. Press OK and then Close on the open windows.
  13. You may need to restart the computer after making this change to get it to work.

For Windows XP

  1. Click the start button and open the control panel.
  2. Open Network and Internet connections.
  3. Click Network connections at the bottom.
  4. Right click the network adapter and choose properties.
  5. In the list, scroll to find the option Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  6. Select it and click Properties below.
  7. Click the option to Use the following IP address:.
  8. In the top box, enter the IP address.
  9. In the second box enter the subnet mask, which will probably be the default 255.255.255.0.
  10. In the third box enter the default gateway.
  11. Press OK and then Close on the open windows.
  12. You may need to restart the computer after making this change to get it to work.
