Knowing how to change a Toyota headlight allows you to do a quick fix and always have substantial light for night driving. Plus, if you don't learn how to change a Toyota headlight your friends will probably make fun of you. Before you start learning how to change a Toyota headlight, you will need to gather the following items.

  • New Headlight (35 watt for low beams, 55 watt for high beams)
  • Clean Cloth
  • Wrench

Once you have gathered these items, it is time to start learning how to change a Toyota headlight.

  1. Open the hood of the car. The first step in learning how to change a Toyota headlight is opening the hood so you can get into the engine compartment. You will be removing and replacing headlights through the front area of the engine compartment. If the coolant is preventing you from reaching down into the front of the engine compartment, use the wrench to detach it and give yourself some more room.
  2. Locate the retaining ring. Each headlight has a retaining ring on the back that you will see in the front of the engine compartment. Turn that ring about halfway to release the old headlight and pull it out through the front of the engine compartment. Detach all the wiring and dispose of the old headlight.
  3. Insert the new headlight. Remember to use the cloth to handle the new headlight, as oils on your hand can cause the bulb to explode when it is turned on. Insert the new headlight through the front of the engine compartment and plug the wiring you removed from the old bulb into the new bulb. Once the new headlight is inside, turn the retaining ring to secure the bulb in place. If you had to move the coolant or any other components, use the wrench to reattach them where they belong. You have now successfully learned how to change a Toyota headlight.
