Simply educating yourself on how is chlamydia spread goes a long way in preventing yourself and others from learning firsthand. Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that affects the genitals and urinary tract and is becoming more rampant in the United States. There are over three million cases of chlamydia that occur in the United States each year. Although chlamydia is treatable with antibiotics, it is known to cause infertility in women. On the flip side, if left untreated, men can become sterile. What are the the most common ways this bacteria  is spread?

  1. Unprotected sex. Transmission through sexual intercourse is the most common way that chlamydia is spread. It can either be through anal, vaginal or oral sex. The spread of this bacteria is relatively easy, being that seventy percent of women do not possess symptoms as a result of chlamydia. You are unaware of its presence in your body and this in return causes it to be easily spread from person to person.
  2. Eye transmission. Chlamydia can also be spread by contact with your eye, either by your hand or other body parts that are moistened with the infected secretions.
  3. Mother to fetus. Chlamydia can also be spread by infected mothers to their fetuses during birth. If you are a mother who is infected with this bacteria, it is imperative you get medical treatment. Chlamydia can lead to premature delivery, low birth rate and many other complications. Prenatal care lessens the chances of the infection being spread to the fetus, because tests are administered to check for the presence of sexually transmitted diseases in the mother.
