When a bare floor will just not do, it's important to know how to choose an area rug. Area rugs can bring beauty and warmth to a room. The abundance of rug designs and materials make choosing an area rug both easy and difficult. It is easy to find many great choices, but it is sometimes difficult to choose an area rug from all of the great choices. Knowing what you want in an area rug will help making the choose simpler.

1.  Knowing the purpose of the rug will make it easier to choose an area rug. An area rug can serve many purposes including the following providing decoration, offer warmth to a bare floor, or act as a mat to catch dirt and crumbs.

2.  Determine the size of the space. Before buying an area rug, the homeowner needs to determine the general size of rug for the space. Leave at least eighteen inches of bare floor space around an area rug to make the room look in proportion. Keeping this guideline in mind will make it easier to choose an area rug that fits a specific room.

3.  Place all of the legs of the main pieces of furniture in the room in a consistent manner. Either place the furniture legs all on the area rug or all legs should be off of the rug to create a more pleasing effect.

4.  Decide on the color and texture when you choose an area rug. Consider the overall look of the rug when it's time to choose an area rug. Keeping the features of an area rug complementary to the other components in the room such as furniture, wall color, drapes, and accessories will make a room look pulled together and cohesive.
