How to Choose a Baseball Bat

Ever wonder how to choose a baseball bat? Choosing a baseball bat is very important and below is the process you will use to decide which bat is best for you. Many people like different bats but most the time they don't even realize they are using the wrong bat to maximize their potential.

To choose a bat you will need:

  • to know what kind of hitter you are
  • honesty
  • a good eye.
  1. The first thing you want to do when choosing a baseball bat is establish what kind of hitter you are. Be very honest with yourself because if your not then your already messing up the process of choosing a baseball bat. If you are a power hitter you will want to take up a heavier bat than if your a hitter for average. The reason? If you swing for the fences then the heavier the bat is, the higher the impact will be forcing your ball to launch even farther. If you do not swing for power then your going to want a lighter bat so you can "slap" the ball in any direction.
  2. If you hit for average it is important not to be fooled into the lighter the better when choosing a baseball bat. As true as it is you do not want the heavy bats, you still want to choose a baseball bat with a little weight on it. The difference is a power hitter will be choosing the type of bat that when he swings it he can actually feel the bat. He can feel the weight swinging from his back shoulder to his front shoulder. As for the average hitters you want it to be as heavy as possible, without it affecting how fast you swing. Because you are using the lighter bat you will want to swing it as fast as possible to really drive it. Why do average hitters use lighter bats? because when you pull the ball what you are doing is taking the ball no matter where it was pitched and following through all the way until it is soaring towards the direction you swing your bat, but when you use a lighter bat you are just trying to get the bat on the ball and sort of not follow through on the swing. One of the elite average hitters Ichiro Suzuki has perfected this type of swing by literally stopping his swing half way through without taking anything of off it.
  3. The final thing you must do when your choosing your baseball bat is determine how long you want it to be. Average hitters tend to have the longer bats because they seem to hit to the opposite field more often. For power hitters their bats tend to be a bit shorter because it helps them pull the ball. Either way no matter what type of hitter you are you want to make sure the bat can reach the opposite side of home as you are on when choosing a baseball bat.

By following that process you should be able to choose the perfect bat for the type of hitter you are. Adjust the settings as you wish, for instance if you are a pure power or average hitter follow those settings by the word but, if you hit for a decent average and decent power then settle somewhere in the middle.
