Figuring out how to choose a college major is an important step of your educational journey. Attending college will be a major milestone in your life, and choosing the right major is key in ensuring future satisfaction with your career path after college. The following tips can help you decide on a college major.

  1. Follow your interests. You may have heard the saying that the key to happiness in your work life is to “do what you love.” Consider your interests and passions to help you choose a college major that will give you the ability to secure a job that you'll be happy in long term. Also, making sure that your college major is a subject that you're truly interested in will help you stay focused and committed to your college success.
  2. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses. To choose a college major, be mindful of your strengths as well as weaknesses, and incorporate those into your decision. For example, a person may like the idea of becoming a nurse and providing hands-on care to those in need, but may be squeamish around needles or the sight of blood. In an instance such as this, selecting nursing as a major would probably not be the best option.
  3. Consider your employment prospects. Think about what type of job you'll be qualified for with a particular major. Try doing some research to find out what the salary and long-term employment outlook is for the field you're considering. If you learn that, for example, the only viable job prospects with a certain major are lower paying than you're willing to live with, or that demand for those jobs is predicted to become low, you may want to instead choose a college major with better-paying, higher-potential employment possibilities.
