How To Choose Eyeglasses

You've had changes to your vision and a trip to your eye doctor left you a prescription in hand but not a clue on how to choose eyeglasses. It isn't a matter of being overly vain, but it is only naturally to want to choose glasses that look good on you. This is especially true considering that they will likely be the first thing that people notice when looking at you. Adjusting to the idea of needing eyeglasses is enough of a change without the additional worry of not choosing the correct eyeglasses that best represent you. Luckily, there are plenty of people and information available to help you make the best choices when shopping for your new spectacles.

What you'll need to choose eyeglasses:

  • A prescription
  • An extra set of eyes
  1. Bring your prescription. If you haven't already, see your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist who will give you a thorough eye examination and write out a prescription for you if necessary. You won't need to know how to read it, but you'll need it on hand to choose eyeglasses.
  2. Select your frames. Ask the Optician on hand to direct you to the frames for men. You'll have a variety of designer and non-designer brands to choose from so keep cost in mind. Also consider if you want rimless, metal rims, or titanium. These will also affect the amount of money you'll spend on the eyeglasses you choose.
  3. Ask for help. The Optician is there to help you out. If you don't have a clue about what type of frame or brand you'd like to wear, the Optician is a valuable source of information. Tell her what you do for a living and if your style is more casual or fancy. She'll have experience enough to direct you towards the type of eyeglasses that work best for your face shape and occupation.
  4. Bring a friend. Take a friend who isn't afraid to give you an honest opinion. A good friend is invaluable in helping to choose eyeglasses. Although an Optician can give you the right frames to try, you can entrust your friend with the power to veto the glasses that don't work for you.

Tips:

  • Before adding special tints or coatings to your glasses, ask the Optician to explain the importance and potential benefits. These additions will cost you money and not all are a necessity.
  • Be sure that you understand the warranty, if any, that is available for your new glasses. Are returns accepted? What happens if the lenses are scratched or the temple breaks?
