How To Choose Jogging Clothes
Unfortunately, unless you have the money to hire a personal trainer, when you decide you want to get in shape and pick jogging as your exercise of choice, there's nobody there to show you how to choose jogging clothes that will be comfortable, affordable, and stand up to repeated washings, but here are some guidelines to help you.
- Don't buy online. This rule should really apply to all clothing purchases, but it's especially important for jogging clothes where comfort is the single most important issue. Unless you've bought the exact same article of clothing before, you never know how it's really going to fit if you buy it online.
- Move. If you just stand there looking at yourself in the mirror when you try on jogging clothes, you're not really going to know whether the clothes are comfortable to jog in or not. Move. Jump up and down. Run in place. Make sure the clothes are still comfortable when you're moving.
- Layer. If you jog in the mornings, you're probably going to be wearing more at the beginning of your run than you'll want to be wearing at the end. Instead of buying a heavy sweatshirt to wear over a thin tee-shirt, layer loose light layers over each other. That way you won't be stuck with being either too hot in a sweatshirt or too cold in just a tee-shirt.
- Look for pockets. A surprising percentage of jogging clothes are made without pockets, which can be incredibly inconvenient if you need to carry keys or your phone with you when you're working out. If you need pockets, make sure to check for them when you're shopping.
- Look for the right materials. It doesn't matter as much if you're jogging in a dry climate, but if you're battling humidity, you want to look for jogging clothes that dry quickly and wick moisture away from your body.
- Consider the sun. If you're going to be jogging when it's sunny out, take that into consideration. You may actually be more comfortable jogging in light loose long sleeves and pants than you would be in shorts and a tank top.
- Ignore designer names. These are your workout clothes. The only thing that matters is that they're comfortable. Save yourself some money and buy inexpensive durable brands. Plenty of less expensive brands makes durable, inexpensive, and comfortable jogging clothes.
- Don't buy white. White jogging tee-shirts and sweatshirts have an unfortunate tendency to collect unsightly stains in the armpits. Nobody likes to see that. You'll keep your jogging clothes longer if you buy colors that won't stain as easily.
- Look at the washing instructions. Don't buy anything that you can't machine wash in hot water. Your jogging clothes will be getting sweaty. That's the whole point, after all.
